Abstract: This international conference, situated in the United States, comes at a time when the United States is close to declaring war on and invading Iraq. Conserving the musical and cultural treasures of Iraq are surely not part of the American planning effort. How powerful a life-affirming force is music in the face of war? Many of the conference presentations have addressed the role of music in resolving conflict and healing the wounds of war; how can music prevent war?
