Abstract: I don’t see theoretical differences, as much as practical distinctions, between academic and public work. As the producer and host for public radio’s American Routes, I play the role of a creator and performer as much as critic or scholar in presenting and interpreting community-based music forms as they are transformed in social, cultural, economic and aesthetic terms to reach wider audiences for vernacular and popular culture.
