Keynote Address – The Melding of Applied and Academic Work: Thinking and Acting Responsibly as Ethnomusicologists |

Abstract: This presentation speculates on why it is so difficult to meld the applied and academic sides of ethnomusicology in the U.S.; it describes lessons the author has learned during a career in which he has sought to meld them; and it proposes specific recommendations for ethnomusicologists, universities, funding agencies and communities that could encourage — and ease — the movement of ethnomsuciologists between theorizing and practicing.
