Field Notebooks
The three notebooks reproduced here consist of a project log and two recording logs all written (mostly in ink) on Ghana Schools No. 2 Note Books with black and white or grey and white marbled covers. In the recording logs Koetting lists each tape and in most cases each separate "track" along with comments on the music, how it is performed and in many cases precise identification of where the recording was made and the names of the performing groups or individuals recorded. The Project Notebook is a combination diary and scrapbook with accounts of his activities (including his expenses, questions to be answered, charts of the demographic make-up of performing groups) along with newspaper clippings, concert programs and an occasional hand-drawn map. Together the notebooks provide an essential companion and guide to the field tapes themselves as well as suggesting avenues for further research. Loose inserts to the three notebooks were scanned separately and listed below under the notebooks in which they are found.
