Obahiah Brown, son of James Browne (16xx-17xx), went to work for his eldest brother, James Browne (1xxx-1739), in the maritime and retail trade. When his brother died on a voyage to the West Indies, Obadiah became a shopkeeper, engaged in maritime and retail trade, provided marine insurance to area merchants, and operated a rum distillery. He also pioneered other manufacturing enterprises such as building a mill to grind cocoa beans, running a spermaceti candle factory, which, in turn, involved him in the whale industry in Nantucket. Because he had no male heirs, he worked closely with his nephews, John and Moses, in addition to his brothers, Nicolas and John Brown.

The partnership of Brown and Benson was established because Nicholas Brown's two sons were still in their teens. He asked Geroge Benson, a former clerk for Nicholas Brown and Company to join a formal partnership in 1783. This collection contains the business papers of the company and papers relating to local and national politics.

The Brown and Ives Company was a vital enterprise that continued from the end of the eigthteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth. During the nineteenth centure Thomas Poynton Ives and Nicholas Brown developed maritime trad ewith Europe and the Far East. They then developed new manufacturing interests in domestic textiles, real estate, banking, canals, turnpikes, and railroads.

Obadiah Brown I (1712-1762) was born in Providence. His father was Elder James Brown (1666-1716), a pastor on the First Baptist Church; his mother was Mary (Harris) Brown. Upon reaching adulthood, Obadiah joined his older brother James Brown II (1698-1739) in the mercantile trade, which included traffic in cocoa, rum, molasses and slaves.

Sullivan Dorr (1778-1858) was born in Boston, Massachusetts to Ebenezer (1739-1809) and Abigail (Cummingham) Dorr (1762-1796).Early in life Sullivan was engaged in the fur trade on the northwest coast of the United States and at the age of twenty, he went to Canton, China to follow mercantile pursuits. Much of his business was for the firm of J.& J. Dorr; based in Boston and owned by his brothers, Jonathan and Joseph. He stayed in Canton for five years (1799-1803) and upon returning to the States he settled in Providence and became a prosperous merchant. He resided in a home he built in 1811 on the northeast corner of Benefit and Bowen Streets.

The Henry Knox Thatcher papers consist of an oil painting of the U.S.S. Constellation, military memorabilia, and three journals and logs kept by Thatcher while on board several ships, including the U.S.S. Brandywine (1839-1841) and the U.S.S. Constellation (1862-1863). The journals reflect ship life, diversions on shore, the social and political climate of his time, and the duties of American ships in the Mediterranean during the early years of the Civil War.
