In 2001, in conjunction with its grant program, the MLN initiated Museums, Composers and Communities (MCC), a pilot partnership with the American Composers Forum, providing the Spencer Museum of Art, KS, Mobile Museum of Art, AL (MMA), and the Western Heritage Center, MT, an opportunity to work with composers and create new music for their communities. This innovative program allowed composers and museum professionals to work together to identify loans of collections from museums throughout the U.S. The composer then worked with the museum and its community to create music inspired by the loan objects. This online exhibition provides sights and sounds created from the collaboration between composer William C. Banfield and the Mobile Museum of Art. The reinstallation of the American sculpture gallery is entitled The American Way.
Banfield's original chamber composition created in response to the loan objects from the three museums was performed at the opening gala and will be expanded for symphony in 2003. Visitors to the MLN website can hear the chamber pieces composed in response to each sculptural piece and learn how the composer's interaction with these works of art inspired his writing of the music.
