The Bindery & Repair Unit is located in the Rockefeller Library and supervised by Whitney Pape. The Bindery's mission is to maintain the Library's holdings good in circulating condition. The work of the Bindery Unit is divided into three areas:
- Final processing and shelf readiness of new acquisitions: newly acquired circulating materials are processed in the Bindery where they receive call number labels, ownership stamps, date due slips, security tags, and final quality control checks. They leave the Bindery and go directly to open shelves. Bindery staff, including student assistants, assist in this work.
- Commercial binding preparation: about 10,000 volumes per year are sent for commercial binding at Acme Bookbinding. The Bindery employs an automated tracking system to control shipments and ensure accuracy. Normal turnaround time is two weeks but one week return is an option. The work is overseen by Stephen Conlon.
- In-house bookbinding and repair: two hand bookbinders, Jim Chapin and Marie Malchodi, who together have more than twenty years of experience in the field, perform well over 2,000 complex repairs annually.
In addition, staff in the Bindery are responsible for making pamphlet binders, phase boxes, music score binders, and other specialized protective enclosures. All materials used in the Bindery Unit are of archival quality.
