LibX Brown Edition is a browser extension that provides direct access to the Library's resources from any page on the web. LibX was developed originally for Firefox. A beta version for Internet Explorer is now available. For help installing LibX see below or contact libweb@brown.edu
Toolbar. Search JOSIAH, eJournals, Google Scholar, Open WorldCat, Ocean State Libraries, and the Center for Research Libraries directly from the LibX toolbar. On the far left click the down arrow under "LibX Brown" for shortcuts to the Library home page, Josiah, your Josiah account, easyBorrow, Databases A-Z, eJournals A-Z, and InfoGate.

Context Menu: Using
the right-click context menu, highlight text on a web page to search JOSIAH, Google Scholar, or find it!@brown.
EZProxy Support: Using the right-click context menu, you may reload a page through the proxy, or follow a link via the proxy, making it appear as though you are coming from an on-campus computer.
Magic Button: LibX uses Google Scholar
to search for articles and directs you to the electronic copy subscribed
to by the Library. Highlight a citation, then drag-and-drop it onto the Scholar
button on the toolbar. You can use this feature even from inside a PDF. (See
SCREENSHOT)
TIP: Be sure you set "Brown University" as your Library Link in Google
Scholar preferences.
Brown Logo Cues: LibX places a small Brown logo as a cue
in web pages you visit if the library has resources related to that page.
For instance, book pages at Amazon or Barnes & Noble
will contain cues that link to the book's entry in Josiah. Cues are displayed
at Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, alibris,
and other pages. See SCREENSHOT.
Support for xISBN: A book title can have
different ISBNs for the
paperback, the hardcover, and for different editions. LibX supports OCLC's
xISBN service: you can find a book, given an ISBN, even if the library
holds this book under a different ISBN. Highlight an ISBN on a page to use this functionality.
Autolinking: LibX automatically turns ISBNs, ISSNs, DOIs, and other identifiers into links to Josiah or "find it! @ brown". To turn autolinking off, uncheck "Autolink Pages" in the drop-down menu to the left of the toolbar.
Support for COinS: LibX supports COinS, which can turn certain hidden SPAN tags inserted by authors or publishers into actionable OpenURL (find it! @ brown) links. For example, a search in Current Law Journal Content will show "find it!@ brown" links in journal tables of contents. More information on COinS.
Hide it: If you like the toolbar, but think it takes up too much space, you can hide it. You can still use the Magic Button and the Right-Click Menu for searching and easily bring the toolbar back when you need to enter a search term. You can toggle the toolbar on and off by pressing F9 on Firefox (if it is not in use by another program) or you can check or uncheck it in >>View >>Toolbars or >>Tools >>Toolbars.
