Purpose:
The Annex is being developed for the Brown University Library to house, preserve and provide access to lesser used library materials of research value, in a cost effective manner and in a safe environment. The Annex will allow the Library to improve the functionality of the campus library facilities both in terms of research and study space, and to create more browsable circulating collections.

Goals:

  • To protect and preserve the collections entrusted to our care.
  • To maintain high quality service combined with an excellent inventory and retrieval systems for easy, quick and reliable access to materials.
  • To provide comfortable and secure on-site reading facilities for those who want to do research at the Annex.
  • To sustain a work environment for Library Annex staff that promotes teamwork, cooperation and communication as values supporting the Brown University Library mission.

The “Design” team has begun meeting to work on the plans for the Library Collections Annex. Eric Shoaf and Barbara Schulz will be working with Ed Milch from Facilities Management and Reese Dill and Bruce Scott, architects. Reese and Bruce are the design gurus of library high-bay shelving facilities, having developed the concept and built them for many, many libraries across the country. They were the architects we wanted to design our facility, and we are very happy to have them on board.

As you can imagine there is a lot to work on, but it is already apparent that the building we have is perfect for our use. Everyone on the team is happy to get going and there is a great feeling of comraderie. We’re still shooting for a November 2004 completion which means we would be able to open for use in January 2005, although it's difficult to project a firm date right now. We’ll see how things progress and keep you informed along the way. Feel free to direct any questions you have to me.

The Library Collections Annex, our off-site shelving center, is less than a year away based on plans going forward. Barbara Schulz and Eric Shoaf have met with the project coordinator, architect, and storage consultant. We made a trip to see the latest module at Harvard Depository, finalized budgets, looked at a sample floorplan, and are well on our way to the beginning of renovations which are expected to start in the early spring.

The building, located at 10 Park Lane just off Rte. 10 in Providence, is already part-occupied by Graphic Services and has received a new roof. Renovations for the library portion of the structure will include removal of windows along the top of the high-bay storage area, installation of shelving, HVAC, and construction of the work areas. The project is scheduled for completion in late fall 2004.

We will be providing periodic updates as the project moves forward. For anyone who may be interested, I have a copy of the sample Annex floor plan available in my office for your perusal. Call or just stop by to have a look.

10 Park Lane Purchased!

We're pleased to announce that the University has formally purchased 10 Park Lane as the future Library Collections Annex. The existing building and surrounding site have passed the various tests associated with the "due diligence" process, meaning that the first major objective, acquiring the future home of the Annex, has been completed. We're happy to report also that the group working on the LCA project has, in conjunction with Brown's Physical Planning Office and the architectural firm of Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott, completed its report which should be submitted to the University administration this coming week. As you'll recall from prior updates, this report is a study that makes recommendations regarding (a) the physical alterations to 10 Park Lane that will result in its conversion to the LCA, (b) the activities associated with transferring of materials from the libraries to the LCA, both in the initial start-up phase and on an on-going basis and (c) a future vision for on-campus library buildings once we have more flexibility from reducing the amount of space devoted to housing the collections. We expect to share the report with you in the near future.
