- Manuscripts Librarian—Brown Family Papers
Brown University Library is seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Manuscripts Librarian for an assignment on the Brown Family Papers. This is a special contract assignment with an expected end date of June 30, 2009. The incumbent will work 20 hours per week.
The Manuscript Librarian will inventory collections, create box and folder lists, re-box and re-folder collections as necessary to preserve the original materials, coordinate transfer of the collections from the John Nicholas Brown Center to the John Hay Library and/or the Library Collections Annex. The incumbent will maintain appropriate processing notes for the collection files and supervise several students assisting with the project.
Requirements:- MLS required with a concentration in Archives preferred.
- At least 2 years experience in the arrangement and description of archival and manuscripts collections required.
- Demonstrated experience in the creation of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids required
- Knowledge of current trends in the processing and description of archival manuscripts collections required

- Library External Relations and Stewardship Officer
Brown University Library is seeking a dynamic, innovative professional for the position of External Relations and Stewardship Officer responsible for developing a comprehensive public relations program for the Library, including correspondence, publications, and event planning. The Library External Relations Officer, under the direction of the University Librarian and in coordination with the Office of Public Affairs and University Relations and the University Division of Advancement, will assist the University Librarian providing effective stewardship of donors, prospects, and Friends of the Library and will collaborate with Library staff to support grant applications for Library initiatives.
Requirements:- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years relevant work experience in public relations, stewardship and development, institutional promotion, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Previous work experience in a higher education setting desirable as well as an understanding of the changing role of the academic library.
- The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with advanced writing and editorial experience.
- The ability to organize multiple projects simultaneously and work successfully in a deadline-oriented environment is needed.
- Prior experience with grant writing procedures is also preferred.

- Associate University Librarian for Access Services
Brown University Library is seeking to hire a visionary and service-oriented Associate University Librarian for Access Services. Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL for Access Services will provide effective leadership and direction for three library departments comprised of approximately 70 exempt and non-exempt staff: Technical Services (acquisitions and cataloging), Circulation and Resource Sharing (circulation, reserves, and interlibrary loan), and Preservation Services (preservation/conservation, bindery, and shelving). Emphasis will be placed on guiding and promoting individual, professional and organizational developments, creative approaches to problem-solving, as well as enriching internal and external partnerships and collaboration that lead to effective operations and transformative strategies for library services. As a member of the Library’s senior administrative team, the AUL for Access Services will play a lead role in library-wide planning and evaluation and in setting the Library’s strategic directions.
Qualifications:- ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, with an advanced degree (Ph.D. or subject master's), or equivalent combination of education and experience in an academic setting.
- Minimum of seven years management/supervisory experience in progressively more responsible positions.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of research libraries, their roles in higher education and the ways in which current and emerging information technologies are changing traditional library services, collections, and spaces.
- The successful candidate should possess an in-depth knowledge of library automation and advanced operational expertise in one or more of the specified areas.
- Demonstrated success in human resource management, including the ability to lead and engage staff through the process of organizational improvement and change.
- Proven record of project management and cross-organizational coordination of tasks and goals is needed.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; well-developed assessment and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and ability to prioritize multiple projects and demands.

- Assistant to the University Librarian
Brown University Library is seeking a highly skilled and self-motivated Assistant to the University Librarian, ready to serve a key administrative role in the University Library. The incumbent will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Office of the University Librarian, supervise one staff member, and monitor critical phases of key projects and library initiatives. The incumbent should have an in-depth understanding of library issues and how they support and contribute to the overall University mission. The incumbent will prepare communications, reports and presentations on behalf of the University Librarian and, under agreed upon circumstances, will also serve as emissary/spokesperson of the University Library vis-à-vis divisional constituencies. The Library Applications Developer is part of the Library's Integrated Technology Services department.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in the designand manipulation of relational databases; demonstrated proficiency in developing and maintaining database-driven web applications
- Experience developing and coding interactive web applications using PHP, Python, Ruby, Perl, HTML, XML, CSS , SQL, Javascript, AJAX, and/or other common tools.
- Demonstrated experience with Unix or Linux server platforms, related software, and basic system administration utilities
- In depth knowledge of Website design, development, implementation, standards, and accessibility/usability guidelines.
- Experience with Web 2.0 technologies such as RDF and AJAX and with designing and implementing web services (REST). Ability to integrate Web 2.0 services to ensure the seamless delivery of online library services.
