Integrated Technology Services: Library IT Project Proposals

Project Name: Web Server Migration

Project Orginator: Jean Rainwater

Contact: Joseph Mancino

Departmental Sponsor: Jean Rainwater

Project Description:
Move Library Web content from pike -- dl.lib.brown.edu -- to sisko -- library.brown.edu -- one of two new Solaris servers purchased by the library. The other Solaris server -- riker -- is to be a dedicated server for Fedora.

Why is this project important?
There is little breathing room on pike which also runs the streaming service, the MJP project, and other large-scale applications. The move of the library web to a server of its own will help ensure the stability of the library website even if other services are down. The current library base URL is not intuitive. This URL of the new server addresses that problem.

Additional Information:
We are considering the alternative of trading in or re-purposing the Solaris boxes for robust linux servers.

Status: pending

ITS Staff Responsibility:

Estimated Completion Date: Summer 2009

Progress Made:
This move has been stalled because of configuration problems with this particular model of Solaris. It has proved difficult to get PHP and Django running together on the machine. The Shibboleth configuration was also problematic.
