• Alan Lomax Database
  Documents the work of folklorist Alan Lomax including audio, video and photographic materials from his fieldwork from 1946 to 1994. (Free) registration required.


• Global Music Archive
  "The Global Music Archive is a multi-media reference archive and resource center for traditional and popular song, music, and dance of Africa and the Americas" To date it includes a bibliograqphy of East African Music and a finding list to the cassette


• Moldenhauer Archives at the Library of Congress
  "This online presentation includes representative examples of more than 130 items from the Archives including many complete works and, as a special presentation, an electronic version of the book's [i.e. Guide to the Moldenhauer Archives] text, which is intended to replace the printed edition. In addition, the book’s inventory of the Archives appears as a finding aid."


• The Hiphop Archive
  "The Hiphop Archive organizes and develops collections, initiates and participates in research activities, sponsors events and acquires material culture associated with Hiphop in the U.S. and throughout the world." The Archive's online presence includes a substantial online bibliography in the "Hiphop University" section.


• Archives of Traditional Music
  The largest university-based ethnographic sound archive, the Indiana University ATM site includes a catalog of the collection and information for researchers.


• SIBMAS: International Directory of Performing Arts Collections and Institutions
  SIBMAS lists over 7000 international institutions with material relating to the performing arts (theatre, opera, music, ballet, film, radio television and pantomime). SIBMAS can be searched by institution name, collection and location.


• Archives of World Music
  The Archive of World Music at Harvard University includes strong collections from Asia, the Middle East, Anglo-American ballads and a growing interest in the music of Latin America.


• British Library Sound Archive
  Includes a catlaog of the 2.5 million plus recordings in all genres of music and including spoken word (drama and literature, oral history and dialects) and wildlife sounds


• Irish Traditional Music Archive
  The largest collection of materials relating to Irish traditional music including the collections of Breandan Breathnach and Hugh Shields


• Southern Folklife Collection
  The University of North Carolina's formidable collection of materials for the study of American folk music and popular culture. The collection includes over 160,000 sound recodings and 3000 video recordings. A link to the catalog is provided.


• UCLA Ethnomusicology Archive
  One of the largest collections of ethnographic sound recordings including commerically produced recordings and field recordings from around the world. Includes a link to the catalog.


• World Music Archives at Wesleyan University
  Icnluding over 3000 sound recordings and 100 video tapes, the Wesleyan archive is strong in Native American (Navaho and Comanche), Indonesian and South Indian music.



Associations and Societies:

• Institute for Vietnamese Music
  The IVM is dedicated to the preservation of, research into, and performance and teaching of traditional Vietnamese music. The IVM's site includes a calendar of performances and lectures, access to instruction in Vietamese music, books and CDs, descriptions of current fieldwork, the archive and several research papers.


• Societe francaise d'Ethnomusicologie
  Includes extensive directory information and a searchable database of research in ethnomusicology.


• Society for American Music
  "The mission of The Society for American Music is to stimulate the appreciation, performance, creation and study of American music in all its diversity, and the full range of activities and institutions associated with that music. "America" is understood to embrace North America, including Central America and the Caribbean, and aspects of its cultures everywhere in the world."


• American Musicological Society (AMS)
  The AMS supports the advancement of research in the various fields of music. Its site includes the AMS Newsletter, and links to various musicological programs and projects, including Doctoral Dissertatons in Musicology.


• International Musicological Society (IMS)
  The IMS supports the advancement of musicological research on the basis of international co-operation. Their site includes a useful directory of members, links to other musicological organizations and lists of forthcoming conferences.


• Society for Ethnomusicology
  SEM was founded in 1955 to promote the research, study, and performance of music in all historical periods and cultural contexts. At present, the Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM) has more than 2,000 members from six continents.


• Society for Music Theory
  The Society for Music Theory was founded in 1977. The Society holds annual meetings, publishes two journals (Music Theory Spectrum and Music Theory Online), and encourages scholarly excellence by giving awards for outstanding publications in music theory.



Audio:

• Ben Gray Lumpkin Digital Folk Music Collection
  "The Ben Gray Lumpkin Collection is an archive of the folk songs that were collected and recorded by Ben Gray Lumpkin while he was a professor of English at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He traveled throughout Colorado, recording the songs that were remembered and sung by people who were living in Colorado between 1950 and 1970. The original collection contains approximately 2,000 performances by 192 individuals."


• British Library - Archival Sound Recordings
  Nearly 24,000 recordings from the British Library Sound Archive including classical, jazz, oral history, environmental and nature recordings and world music.


• Cylinder Preservation and Digitization Project
  "With funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the UCSB Libraries have created a digital collection of nearly 8,000 cylinder recordings held by the Department of Special Collections. In an effort to bring these recordings to a wider audience, they can be freely downloaded or streamed online."


• Digital National Library of Serbia
  Digital collection of 150 - 78 rpms from the National Library Collection. It is rich in "Folk Dances, Hymns, and records of Popular Melodies, performed by famous Ensembles, as well as Records of Opus of Famous Domestic and Foreign Composers"


• Emil Berliner and the Birth of the Recording Industry
  Part of the American Memory Project at the Library of Congress, this site includes a large selection of the Berliner Recordings in the LC collections. Among them are recording of the Sousa Band, popular instrumental tunes, spoken comedy, popular vocalists, and Native American music.


• Free Music Archive
  "The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads. The Free Music Archive is being directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet." Browsable by genre, the FMA includes a broad range of contemporary and historic styles.


• International Library of African Music
  Over 12000 tracks of field recordings from Hugh Tracey's work in Sub-Saharan Africa.


• Internet Archive: 78 rpms
  793 songs from early 20th century 78 rpm recordings. Includes classical, jazz, popular, and folk music.


• Juneberry 78s: Early American Roots Music
  Includes blues, gospel, old-time, cajun, Irish, and calypso music. Some listening categories require password, available from the site itself.


• Monterey Jazz Festival Collection
  Includes over 1,000 hours of audio and video content from the Monterey Jazz Fesitval.


• Music from India
  "The recordings featured in this collection were all recorded by the recordist and ethnomusicologist, Rolf Killius, as part of a collaborative project between Rolf, The British Library and the Horniman Museum. The aim of the project – entitled Traditional Music in India and set up in 2000 – has been to record, document and research folk, devotional and ritual music of India, and to collect and document relevant musical instruments."


• Other Minds
  "Material available on radiOM.org has been selected from the ever growing archives of Other Minds. Here you will find recordings of OM's past music festivals and concert productions, selected recordings of new music sent to us by composers from around the world, and selections from 4000 hours of audiotape recordings from the KPFA Radio Music Department collection transferred to Other Minds in 2000.   Streaming for several hundred electroacoustic works by member composers.


• Sound Samples
  This collection of loops, sound effects, have been gathered, prepared and licensed via Creative Commons for public use under the OLPC license meaning you are free to share,and to remix as long as you provide attribution for the source of these materials.


• Virtual Gramomphone: Canadian Historical Sound Recordings
  Growing database of over 5,000 Canadian 78 rpm recordings including classical, popular and folk music.

  "The Digital Library of Appalachia seeks to provide online access to archival and historical materials related to the culture of the southern and central Appalachian region." The site includes collections featuring religion, art and culture, education, music, politics and government, domestic life, minorities and work.



Indexes:

• Folk Song Index
  From Oberlin College Libraries in collaboration with Sing Out! The Folk Song Index is "An index to traditional folk songs of the world with an emphasis on English-language songs. Each entry includes the song title, first line of chorus, first line of verse, and full bibliographic information on the source. The index contains over 42,700 entries, and, to date, indexes over 2,225 anthologies."

  A guide to folk music online, edited by High Blumenfeld. Especially valuable for its extensive and well-maintained library of links -- organized into 30 categories



Online Sheet Music:

• Bach Gesellschaft
  A downloadable series of files of the Bach Werke published by Breitkopf & Hartel. You will need to download a special reader (these are NOT pdfs)


• Bayerische Staatsbibliothek
  Under the Digitale Sammlungen (Digital Collections), one can find numberous printed editions of Handel, Mendelssohn, etc.


• Bilioteca de Catalunya
  This project includes a number of scores of published music by Albeniz.


• Duke University: Sheet Music Collections
  Lists sheet music collections around the U.S. withlinks to those having online collections.


• Free Sheet Music Library
  PDFs of orchestral, chamber music (Mozart only as of this writing), piano music, organ music and the complete church cantatas of J.S. Bach in vocal score.


• Harvard University: Loeb Music Library - Digital Scores Collection
  Includes ealry editions of works by members of the Bach family, Mozart, Verdi, and the Harvard Glee Club's Harvard Song Book.


• International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP)
  "IMSLP attempts to create a virtual library containing all public domain musical scores, as well as scores from composers who are willing to share their music with the world without charge."


• Music Library Scores Collection (UMich)
  "This resource is comprised of scores held in the Music Library's general and special collections. Works featured here represent a variety of styles and genres, including songs, solo and chamber music, operas, and compositions for orchestra. • Sibley Music Library: Musical Scores
  "Scores and books in the public domain. Many of these are unique to the Sibley Music Library collection." Sibley runs an "on demand" digitizing service adding public domain materials from their collections.


• The Classical String Quartet, 1770-1840
  "The Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library at Duke University has about forty collections of string quartets in parts dating from this time (about1770-1840 ), most, though not all complete, and representing composers whose works are rarely found in modern editions. Digitization of these parts makes newly available for performance, study and recording a large and varied repertoire of works for this instrumental ensemble."


• Choral Public Domain Library

• Gutenberg Music
  A subproject of Project Gutenberg, Gutenberg Music includes a small collection of public domain chamber music editions in XML, .pdf, Finale and other formats.


• Mutopia
  Over 400 pieces of classical and popular music for a variety of instruments. File formats include .pdf and MIDI. Includes source code allowing for custom printing and user editing.


• Variations: Online Musical Scores
  Part of the Indiana Variations Project, this site includes several hundred public domain scores from the Indiana University Music Library.
