GENERAL LAWS

About This Resource

The easiest way is to search the online resources. LexisNexis allows keyword searching.

The numbering system is usually § Title, Chapter, Section. For example, § 17-1-2 is Title 17 (Elections), Chapter 1 (General Provisions), Section 2 (Definitions), which deals with the definitions of elected officials. If multiple sections are cited, the double §§ signs are used, e.g. §§ 7-1-1 - 7-1-26.

About This Resource

You can get full text of the laws online back to 1995. For laws passed before that date, search the paper.

The numbering system is Public Law, Chapter Number, session year, chamber (S=Senate, H=House), bill number. For example, Rhode Island Public Law Chapter 209 2004 -- H 8392 "An Act Relating to Workplace Safety" is the 209th Chapter (law) from 2004, that is the approval of House Bill 8392.

Bills are numbered by year, chamber, and number of bill. For example, 2005 -H 6052 "An Act Relating to Food and Drugs - The Rhode Island Medical Marijuana Act" is a House bill numbered 6052 in 2005.

About This Resource

 

Court Decisions through LexisNexis is the easiest way to search for all court cases, and it has full text. Cases will be cited in both of the following systems:

The numbering system for the Reports of cases heard and determined in the Supreme court of Rhode IslandVolume is R.I., page. For example, 122 R.I. 1 "Pamela J. Paradiso v. Joseph J. Paradiso" is the case in Volume 122 of the Rhode Island Reports (R.I.) on page 1.

The numbering system is Rhode Island Reporter is Volume, A.2d, page. For example, 415 A.2d 729 "State v. McKenna" is in volume 415 on page 729 of the Altanic Reporter, 2nd Series (Technically, the Rhode Island Reporter is reported in the Atlantic Reporter.

Rhode Island Reporter is published by a private firm and covers 1980-1990.

State Library Online Catalog probably has the most comprehensive records of all documents produced by the State of Rhode Island. You can interlibrary loan (ILL) them or take a short walk down to the State Capitol where the library is.

Rhode Island Justice Commission plans, coordinates, and collects data on adult and juvenile criminal justice systems.

State of Rhode Island General Assembly is the main website of R.I.'s legislative branch.

  • Law Revision Website keeps track all of the changes or potential changes to the Rhode Island statutes currently in effect.

State of Rhode Island: Lieutenant Governor chairs committees such as Long-Term-Care Coordinating Council, Small Business Advocacy Council and the Rhode Island Emergency Management Advisory Council
