Advances in Polymer Science (Springer Book Series)
A monographic series on that presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in polymer and biopolymer science including chemistry, physical chemistry, physics and materials science.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
Current edition of the print Handbook plus tables from older editions. Some tables are interactive and can be downloaded. Search by keyword in the text or substance/property search (by name, formula, CAS Registry No., molecular weight, and/or subject); back-of-the-book index is not interactive.

Knovel Library
Current; Knovel's "flagship" books are the Plastics Design Library Series, Perry's Chemical Engineers Handbook, ChemEssentials, Lange's Handbook of Chemistry, and a host of titles in mechanics & mechanical engineering featuring Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineers along with the ASME Boiler and Pressure vessel codes. Knovel's toxicology offerings are quite comprehensive with 21 books. Popular books being the Dictionary of Substances and Their Effects, Sittig's Handbook of Toxic and Hazardous Chemicals and Carcinogens, Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, and, Patty's Toxicology and Industrial Hygiene. Knovel has recently partnered with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers to make available the many important books in the Center for Chemical Process Safety Guidelines Series. Lastly, Knovel has many of the important DoD Military Handbooks, including a fully interactive version of MIL-HDBK-5H: Metallic Materials and Elements for Aerospace Vehicle Structures. For help getting started see Knovel Library Video Tutorial. For video help on personalizing Knovel see My Knovel Video.

Lecture Notes in Physics (Springer Book Series)
1997-present; Lecture Notes in Physics reports new developments in physics research and teaching. Books in the series, conceived as bridging material between advanced graduate textbooks and the forefront of research, serve three purposes: (1) up-to-date reference on a well-defined topic, (2) introduction to a new field for postgraduates and non-specialist researchers from related disciplines, and (3) source of advanced teaching materials. Since 2004, LNP includes titles from the former Lecture Notes in Chemistry (LNC) series pertaining to the fields of theoretical and physical chemistry.

National Academies Press
Over 3,000 scientific books online dealing with all subjects, produced by different branches of the National Academies of Science. [This resource is publicly available.]

Springer Tracts in Modern Physics
Provides comprehensive and critical reviews of topics of current interest in physics.

Structure and Bonding (Springer Book Series)
Publishes critical reviews on topics of research concerned with chemical structure and bonding. The scope of the series spans the entire Periodic Table and addresses structure and bonding issues associated with all of the elements.

Synthesis Digital Library of Engineering and Computer Science
Current; Synthesis is an information service for the research, development, and educational community in engineering and computer science. The basic component of the library is a 50- to 100-page "Lecture"; a self-contained electronic book that synthesizes an important research or development topic, authored by an expert contributor to the field. The library and its lectures are organized by series. Each series is managed by a prominent consulting editor. The series editor guides lecture topic and author selection as well as peer review. New series and lectures will be added continuously and existing lectures will be revised as needed.

Topics in Current Chemistry (Springer Book Series)
Presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in modern chemical research. The scope of coverage includes all areas of chemical science including the interfaces with related disciplines such as biology, medicine and materials science.

Deep Searching of eBooks with InfoGate

In addition to using Josiah for known items (author/title) and for LC Subject Heading searching, there are other ways to search deeply into some subscribed ebooks and many free ebooks: Google Book, Internet Archive, and Project Gutenberg searching and linking can be performed within these options.

  1. Enhanced searching of full text (chapters, indexes, and Table-of-Contents) -- use subject QuickSets and general QuickSet.

    QuickSets are found at: http://sfx.brown.edu:8331/V?func=quick-1

Good for very specific searching, and discovering detailed portions of larger general works. Searches across aggregated full-text services (e.g. Early English Books, engineering handbooks, etc).

Not as good for general subject discovery ... see Josiah for controlled vocabulary and broad subject headings ... and to discover LC call number ranges for browsing the physical book stacks.

  2. Seamless federated searching of Josiah and fulltext ebooks
The QuickSets above offer one-stop searching of both Josiah and deep fulltext searching. This allows for both keywords within online texts and controlled subject headings within library subject catalogs. The less sophisticated search interface does not offer the best of either service, but it provides a good compromise for starting research. This will often lead researchers to more powerful native mode searching in various platforms.
