EARS -- Frequently Asked Questions
- What do I need to install in order to listen to the sound excerpts?
To listen to audio clips on EARS, you must have Real Audio's RealOne player installed on you computer. The Real One player is available free of charge for both Windows and Mac platforms at www.real.com.
- I have Real Audio installed, but it's not working [I get a "file not found" message]
Go to the tools menu in the Real One player and choose preferences, then media types, be sure that the following are checked: Real Audio and Real Video and Other media.
- Why can't I use Windows Media Player, or Quicktime to listen to recorded examples?
While our server can stream Windows media files and Quicktime files, it requires Real Audio's Real One player to play them. Our server software comes from Real Audio and employs RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) requiring the use of the Real One player.
- Can I download copies of the listening excerpts?
The short answer is no. We believe that the downloading of files from EARS, most if not all of which are protected by copyright, would go beyond the provisions of fair use. When logging in, you click a button which indicates your acceptance of this policy.
- Which file formats streamed by EARS?
Most EARS files are MP3 files.
- What do I do if I get the message "rtsp is not a registered protocol"?
If you are running RealPlayer version 10 you need to make sure that
Real-Time Streaming Protocol is enabled. To enable RTSP click on Tools
on the RealPlayer menu bar then select Preferences. In the popup
window open the Content category and select Media Types. Click on the
Advanced tab and in the Other Media section of the popup window click
the box alongside Real-Time Streaming Protocol.
