This site is a project database created by students in the "Web Development with XML: Design and Applications" workshop sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries and held at the University of North Carolina in January, 2009. This prototype XML application is built using the eXist XML database software (exist.sourceforge.net), and uses data graciously provided by the Encyclopedia Virginia project at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the Virginia Center for Digital History's Virtual Jamestown project.
Students in the workshop encoded a series of documents according to a schema designed for this class, developed XSLT stylesheets to render these documents and to combine data from different documents, and developed a series of XQuery statements to browse and search the resulting document collection.
