White Mountain Reservation:

The western Apache peoples claimed the region surrounding the White Mountains of Arizona as their traditional home for years before the U.S. Army arrived in the late 1860s. In 1869, Colonel John Green met with Apache leaders and made plans to establish a reservation. In 1870, a military camp, originally called Camp Ord, was established on the White Mountain River. This would eventually become known as Camp Apache, and the reservation surrounding it became known as the White Mountain Reservation.
