Texas:

"Texas" comes from the Caddoan word tysha, which means "friends." The region was first colonized by the Spanish in the 16th century. During the early 19th century, many US settlers were attracted to the region, eventually leading the settlers in Texas to revolt against the Mexican government in the 1830s. Texas became an independent republic in 1836, and was granted statehood by the US in 1845. This set off conflict between the US and Mexico that eventually led to the Mexican-American War.
