New Mexico:

Named a "new Mexico" by Spanish explorers in the mid-16th century, New Mexico was a province of New Spain and later a Mexican state. It was ceded to the United States after the Mexican-American War, and the current borders of the territory were completed in 1853 with the Gadsden Purchase. New Mexico achieved statehood in 1912.
