Gen. Nathan Augustus Monroe Dudley:

Born in 1825 at Roxbury, Massachusetts, Nathan Dudley was commissioned as a first lieutenant in 1855, and took part in expeditions against the Sioux in 1855 Nebraska, 1857 in Utah, and he became a captain in May of 1861. He served in Arizona in 1870-71 with the 3rd Cavalry, and while there was court-martialed, though acquitted, at Camp McDowell. He served in the Department of the Platte, and in the District of New Mexico, and became a lieutenant colonel in the 9th Cavalry in 1876. Retiring in 1889 as a brigadier general, he was a controversial figure, having been court-martialed three times in his career.
