Los Angeles:

The town of Los Angeles was founded in 1781 under the orders of the Spanish governor of California, Felipe de Neve. Control of Los Angeles was transferred to the United States with the close of the Mexican-American War. The town began to grow with the arrival of rail lines connecting ito to San Francisco and Santa Fe in 1876 and 1885. In 1892, oil was disovered, further propelling the population expansion.
