John Philip Clum:

Born in Claverack, New York, in 1851, John Philip Clum attended Rutgers College as a divinity student. He joined the U.S. Signal Corps as a weather observer and then became a missionary to the San Carlos Apache Reservation in Arizona in 1874. From 1874 to 1877, he served as an agent for the Dutch Reformed Church to the Apache at San Carlos, Arizona. He resigned his post in 1877, bought the Arizona Citizen, then sold it in 1880. He went on to be the first mayor of Tombstone, Arizona, and to found the Tombstone Epitaph.
