General Irwin McDowell:

Born in Columbus, Ohio in October 15, 1818, Irwin McDowell graduated from West Point in 1838. After serving for a time as a tactics instructor at West Point, McDowell saw action in the Mexican American War, and is most famous for his service during the Civil War, namely his major defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run as commander of the Union forces. McDowell was also blamed for the Union loss at the Second Battle of Bull Run. In 1864 he was given command of the Department of the Pacific, which included California, Nevada, and Arizona. He left the command in 1868, but returned to command the Division of the Pacific in 1876, in charge of the entire west coast. Fort McDowell on the west bank of the Gila River is named after McDowell.
