General George Stoneman:

Born 1822 in Busti, New York, Stoneman attended West Point and graduated in 1846 as a brevet second lieutenant. He served in the Mexican War as a quartermaster and was subsequently stationed in California. He became a brevetted major general in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. In 1866, Stoneman joined the Democratic Party in opposition to the policies of Reconstruction. With the rank of lieutenant colonel he took command of the Department of Arizona, First Military District, in 1866, and remained there until his retirement in 1871.
