Col. Edwin Augustus Rigg:

Born in Philadelphia in 1822, Edwin Rigg raised Company A, First California Volunteer Infantry in San Francisco and became the first captain on August 15, 1861. During this time he selected the site for the future Fort Goodwin on the Gila River under the direction of General Carleton. After being discharged at Santa Fe in September 1864, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel of the First California Veteran Infantry until being mustered out on October 13, 1866. He went on to serve as a lieutenant in the 38th and 25th U.S. Infantry, and resigned in 1871. He went on to become the justice of the peace in Contention, Arizona, in 1881.
